AC Vent Cleaning

Every supply register cover and every return grille comes off. Each is cleaned front and back — the back is where the heavy loading is and where a quick wipe-down never reaches. Then the boot behind the opening is vacuumed with a HEPA machine and a brush attachment, as far in as the tooling reaches, so the debris that has collected at that transition leaves the house instead of being pushed further in.

Return openings get particular attention. The return grille and filter slot pull the highest air velocity in the system, and any gap around the filter frame deposits unfiltered dust directly at that point. We clean it, and we tell you if the filter slot is leaking, which is a five-dollar fix that prevents years of re-loading.

Covers go back on straight and snug, with any broken tabs or bent fins noted. Plan on one to two hours for a typical Valley home with 8 to 16 openings.

With a register out, we can see whether the boot is still sealed to the ceiling drywall, whether flex has separated from the boot collar, whether insulation is pulled back, and whether the duct interior beyond the boot is clean or loaded. That single look tells us whether you need a full duct cleaning, a duct repair, or nothing at all.

A separated boot is worth finding. In an East Valley attic it pulls 140°F air straight into a supply run, which shows up as one room that never keeps up in July and a cooling bill nobody can explain. We photograph what we find and quote repairs separately — no pressure, no same-day decision.

We also check register sizing and placement. Undersized supply registers whistle and starve rooms; undersized returns raise static pressure across the whole system. Both are fixable with hardware rather than with a cleaning, and knowing which problem you actually have saves money.

Cleaning register covers yourself is completely reasonable: pull the screws, wash the cover in the sink or with a damp microfiber cloth, dry it, reinstall. If your complaint is purely cosmetic, that afternoon of work will handle it.

The boot is the part homeowners can't do well. A household vacuum lacks the sealed HEPA filtration to capture what it pulls, so fine dust goes through the bag and back into the room, and the crevice tool cannot agitate what is packed at the bottom of the transition. Ceiling openings add a ladder and an overhead mess. If dust keeps coming back after you clean the covers, the boot is why.

The other reason to have us do it is the diagnostic value. You get every opening in the house inspected and photographed in the same visit, which usually settles whether the bigger duct cleaning is worth buying.
