Register Cleaning

Every supply register and return grille comes off the wall or ceiling. Each is cleaned front, back, and through the fin channels, which is the only way to get the loading out of a stamped-steel or extruded-aluminum cover. Dampers get opened, closed, lubricated where appropriate, and left in a documented position rather than jammed.

Then the hardware review: bent or crushed fins straightened where the metal allows, broken mounting tabs and stripped screw holes noted, and painted-shut louvers identified. Where a cover is beyond saving — and painted-over registers usually are — we quote a replacement rather than pretending a cleaning will restore it.

We vacuum the boot behind each opening with HEPA equipment as we go, so reinstalling a clean cover isn't the last step in front of a dirty transition. Reinstallation is square, snug, and gasketed where the original had a gasket.

Registers are sized for a target face velocity. Too small for the airflow behind them and you get noise, a narrow high-speed jet instead of a spread pattern, and rooms that feel drafty in one spot and warm three feet away. Return grilles are worse offenders: a single undersized return is one of the most common reasons a Valley system runs high static pressure, which shortens blower and compressor life.

We check for the tells. Whistling or a rushing sound at one opening, a supply that throws a sharp stream instead of fanning across the ceiling, a return grille that pulls a sheet of paper flat against it hard enough to hold, and dust drawn in a visible pattern around a leaky filter slot.

Where the register is genuinely the bottleneck, a high-flow cover with a larger free area is a cheap fix — often the difference between a room that keeps up in July and one that doesn't. Where the register is fine and the duct behind it is the problem, we say that instead of selling hardware.

Painting registers in place is the most common thing we undo. The paint bridges the louvers, reduces free area, and glues the damper blade to the frame. Once that has happened a couple of times, the cover has effectively become a partial blockage, and no cleaning restores the original opening.

The correct approach going forward: pull the register, mask or finish it off the wall, let it dry fully, verify the damper still moves, then reinstall. If you are repainting a room, that is fifteen minutes per opening and it protects the airflow you paid for. If a register is already fused shut, replacement is cheaper than the labor to strip it.

Aesthetically, matching new registers across a house also fixes the mismatched-vintage look that thirty years of one-at-a-time replacements leaves behind, which matters if you are preparing a home to sell.
